Tell us about the animal and bring any existing chip information if you have it. We can check for an existing microchip before fitting another.
Fit and scan
A trained implanter fits the chip beneath the skin with a sterile applicator, then scans it to confirm the number reads correctly.
Record the details
We explain the registration details and how to keep your phone number and address current on the database. Keep the chip number and paperwork in a safe place.
Microchipping in England
Dogs must be microchipped and registered by eight weeks old. In England, cats must be microchipped and registered by 20 weeks old, even if they live indoors. Keepers are responsible for ensuring their details remain up to date on an approved database.
When a pet changes keeper, the registration needs updating. Our £15 microchipping price includes the transfer fee between Tails of Gloucester, the breeder or current keeper, and future owners, as described in our current service offering. Microchipping FAQs
Does the chip track my pet’s location?
No. A microchip is identification, not GPS. It stores a number which a compatible scanner can read. Your contact details are held by the registration database.
Does it hurt?
It is a brief procedure similar to an injection, and pets may react differently. Tell us if your pet is particularly nervous so we can talk through the appointment.
Is registration included?
We’ll explain the registration process and the information needed. Our advertised £15 price includes the transfer fee described above. Weekend and bank holiday appointments have a £10 supplement, and home-visit mileage may apply; we will confirm the total at booking.
What if my pet is already chipped?
Do not have a second chip fitted simply because your details have changed. Contact the database holding your pet’s existing record to update it. If you do not know the database, the government guidance explains how to check the chip number.
Can you microchip my cat or another small pet?
Yes for cats, and please ask us about suitability for other small pets. Tell us the species and age when enquiring.
