Waiting to find out if your dog or cat is expecting can be exciting and a little nerve-racking. At Tails of Gloucester we offer pregnancy ultrasound appointments designed to be calm and straightforward. You can come to our Kingsway base, or ask us about a visit to your home.
We use a SmartBreeder Portable Ultrasound Scanner. Its portable format allows us to bring the equipment to your pet rather than asking every animal to travel. We’ll discuss the mating dates and your questions when you enquire so we can arrange an appropriate appointment.
What happens during an appointment?
We take a gentle, practical approach and allow time to settle your pet and explain the scan.
Before your visit
Tell us your pet’s species, approximate mating dates and any questions you have. We will discuss timing, travel and any preparation when booking.
During the scan
We apply ultrasound gel and move the probe over the abdomen to view the image. Depending on your pet’s coat and the image, a small area of fur may need to be clipped; we’ll discuss this with you first.
Afterwards
We explain what we were able to see in plain language and discuss whether a repeat scan or veterinary follow-up is advisable.
What can the scan tell me?
Pregnancy ultrasound may help identify a pregnancy, but the result depends on timing, the animal and image quality. A scan cannot guarantee the number of puppies or kittens, their sex, or that a pregnancy will progress normally. If it is too early or an image is unclear, we will tell you.
Our service is for pregnancy checking. It is not a substitute for a veterinary examination or diagnosis. If your pet has pain, discharge, bleeding, lethargy or other signs of illness, contact a vet promptly rather than waiting for a scan.

Pregnancy scanning FAQs
When should I book a scan?
Tell us the mating dates when you enquire. We will suggest an appropriate appointment window; a scan booked too early can be inconclusive.
Do you scan both dogs and cats?
Yes. Please tell us your pet’s species, temperament and any relevant concerns when you book.
Can you tell me exactly how many puppies or kittens there are?
No. Ultrasound is not a reliable way to guarantee litter size. Ask your vet if you need clinical advice on pregnancy or delivery planning.
Can you come to my home?
Home visits can be arranged. Mileage charges may apply depending on your location; we’ll confirm any extra charge before booking.
How much does it cost?
Pregnancy ultrasound scanning starts from £35. Weekend and bank holiday appointments have a £10 supplement; home-visit mileage may also apply. We will confirm the total before booking.
